The Barranc d'Algendar is the most important ravine on the island. It begins near Ferreries, next to the main road that connects Maó with Ciutadella, on the hill known as Santa Magdalena or d'Urgell, and flows into Cala Galdana beach. It is 7 kilometers long, which is half the average width of the island, which is 13.5 kilometers. Its steepest walls can reach up to 80 meters in some places, although the most common height is 50 meters.

It is a ravine carved by the action of the stream that runs along its bottom, and it is an exceptional case on the island, as it carries water year-round with a considerable flow, even in the driest years. This characteristic is due to the fact that the stream drains a large area of land from Pla Verd to the Santa Águeda massif and, in addition, receives contributions from the groundwater of the Migjorn aquifer, which surfaces in the lowest parts of the ravine. This is spectacularly evident near the mouth of the ravine, where we find the Eucaliptus spring, where the aquifer's outflows permanently flood the land surrounding the stream. The year-round flow of water by the stream fosters the existence of riparian vegetation that is uncommon in Menorca.
