The Old Town (Ciutat Vella) can be divided into four main districts: the Gothic Quarter (Barrio Gótico), Barceloneta, El Born and El Raval.

El Barrio Gótico is located between Las Ramblas and Via Laietana and is Barcelona's most touristy area. When the Eixample was built in the 1900s, many residents moved out of the Barrio Gótico to take advantage of the better quality of life and the area became neglected. Over the last decade or so however, the area has undergone a massive regeneration which has seen the tourists flood in, crime go down and the value of properties rise.
