Majestic 8-bedroom mansion by architect Fernando Higueras for sale in Somosaguas, Madrid

  • Bathrooms 6
  • Size 1,210m²
  • Plot size 2,753m²

Architectural jewel by the renowned Madrid architect Fernando Higueras, with spectacular eaves for sale in the exclusive and prestigious Somosaguas Norte development, Madrid.

Lucas Fox is pleased to present this impressive work of art of excellent quality, an architectural gem with a lot of history, for sale in a privileged and secure area of Pozuelo de Alarcón. The house is located in one of the best areas of Somosaguas Norte, one of the most sought-after residential areas of the capital.

Every work of art involves a process of inspiration and a tribute, in this case to the unique beauty of the art of Juana La Macarrona who impressed Fernando Higueras, a great architect, predecesor of informalism, who flees from rationalism to take refuge in organic influences, such as the works by Frank Lloyd Wright.

To understand its unique qualities it is necessary to understand the story behind the character that inspired the work. Juana "La Macarrona" or Juana Vargas (Jerez de la Frontera, 1860) was a descendant of a family of artists and made her debut as a Flamenco dancer at the early age of 8 years old. At that very moment, her career took off for the world to see her triumph on stage with her graceful and delicate movement of Andalusian style.

So beautiful were her movements that, years later, Fernando Higueras himself decided to honour her in his own home. How? Creating spectacular overhangs in memory of the grace of the dancer's arms. Large and elegant are the hallmark of La Macarrona (which takes its name from Juana herself), a masterpiece of Spanish residential architecture that hides another nod to its story inside: the circular staircases that again remind us of the ruffles of the dancer's dresses.

Its construction in Somosaguas from 1971 to 1976 was executed with long interlocking beams and large cantilevered eaves that are reminiscent of Japanese architecture, as well as Frank Lloyd Wright. La Macarrona is the subject of multiple studies in universities and architecture schools, and was inhabited for a long time by the family of an architect who bought it out of pure devotion to the profession.

Both its exterior and interior are characterized by large 22-metre-long beams and joists that prevail throughout the space and that were intentionally chosen from white concrete to give an appearance of lightness, as if the house were floating on the 2,753 m² plot.

The 1,210 m² house has 3 floors with a layout to optimize the useable area. In addition, it has been designed to accentuate the fluidity between the interior and exterior spaces with sliding windows with access to several terraces. The Oregon pine wood joinery and retaining stone walls that organise the lower space provide a rustic character to the home.

After crossing the main entrance on the ground floor, we find two large hallways with symmetrical spiral staircases, a living room facing the pool, a furnished kitchen, a dining room and several porches. Once in the private areas, on the first floor, we find four bedrooms with two bathrooms, all of them organised around a central multipurpose triple-height space (meeting room, games room, leisure and sports area). On the top floor, we find another four bedrooms and four bathrooms with open terraces, organized around a gallery that connects with the central space. On this same floor, there is also another multipurpose room, offering more privacy than the previous one.

Without a doubt, its iconic elements are the symmetrical spiral staircases, high ceilings, and spacious rooms. In addition, it has a great strategically planned lighting, with overhead and diffused light that enhances the quality of the open spaces on the upper floors, especially the multipurpose space on the middle floor. This unique home is very cozy in winter, but open and private in summer.
