El Born, Barcelona: Location and surroundings of this property

The apartment is located in the heart of El Born, very close to the Parc de la Ciutadella and the Paseo del Borne, with numerous restaurants, shops and galleries within walking distance.

It is 6 minutes' walk from the train station of Arc del Triomf and the closest metro station is Urquinaona.

The Old Town (Ciutat Vella) is unique in that unlike other areas of Barcelona you can find a mix of social classes and ethnic groups living side by side. It is not unusual to see young businessman and traditional Catalan families rubbing shoulders with immigrant families and creative types.

It can be divided into four main districts: the Gothic Quarter (Barrio Gótico), Barceloneta, El Born and El Raval.

El Barrio Gótico is located between Las Ramblas and Via Laietana and is Barcelona's most touristy area. When the Eixample was built in the 1900s, many residents moved out of the Barrio Gótico to take advantage of the better quality of life and the area became neglected. Over the last decade or so however, the area has undergone a massive regeneration which has seen the tourists flood in, crime go down and the value of properties rise.

The area also boasts some of the finest music venues in Europe including the Gran Teatre del Liceu Opera house and the stunning Modernista Palau de la Música, as well as the Picasso Museum and the city's main Cathedral.

Las Ramblas merges into El Raval, which is currently undergoing some major renovation and gentrification. With a slightly more edgy, bohemian vibe than the other quarters of the Old Town, El Raval is home to some great bars, the MACBA Contemporary Arts Museum, a new university campus and several other places of interest.

At the lower end of the Gothic Quarter you'll find El Born, Barcelona's trendy vibrant quarter with its maze of narrow winding streets, independent shops, exciting eateries and historical buildings. El Born borders the Park Ciutudella (home to the city's zoo), on one side and the former fisherman's quarter Barceloneta, on the other.

Property and house hunting: Many of the Old Town's buildings have undergone makeovers in the last decade or so and it has become a popular area for investors. Apartments have been converted into loft-style spaces retaining original features such as mosaic floor tiling, exposed brickwork and beams. Many of the buildings have also been converted into hotels.

Transport: Because of its proximity to Plaza Catalunya, the Old Town is well connected to all areas of the city. As well as the metro (L1 and L3), it has an extensive rail network (FGC, Cercanias, Regionales), numerous bus routes including night buses as well as the terminal for the airport bus (Aerobus).

Places of interest: La Boqueria food market, Las Ramblas, Liceu Opera house, Palau de La Música, Picasso Museum, Catedral de la Santa Creu i Santa Eulàlia, Barcelona Zoo, Chocolate Museum, Wax Museum, Santa Maria del Mar Church, Maritime Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona (MACBA).

Shopping: The Old Town is home to numerous small independent boutiques as well as chain stores such as Zara, Mango, Massimo Dutti etc located mainly in and around the busy Portal de l'Angel. You can find some of Barcelona's most exciting up-and-coming fashion designers in El Born and a great selection of vintage clothing shops, new designer boutiques and concept stores in El Raval.

Bars and restaurants: You'll find some of the most interesting bars and restaurants in and around the tree-lined Paseo del Borne as well as more established ones offering cutting edge cuisine such as Comerç 24 and Espai Sucre. Europe's largest food market La Boqueria has some fantastic tapas bars, whilst if fresh fish is what you are after, look no further than the plethora of seafood restaurants in Barceloneta's Calle Joan de Borbó.
