The old town or Ciutat Vella consists of four main districts: the Gothic Neighbourhood , La Barceloneta, El Born and El Raval.

The Gothic Neighbourhood , which includes the Rambla and the Vía Layetana, is the most touristic area of Barcelona. When l'Eixample was built in the 1900s, many residents moved from the Gothic Neighbourhood in search of a better quality of life, so the area fell into disrepair. However, in the last decade, it has experienced a huge boom that has seen a growth in tourism, a decrease in the crime rate and an increase in property values.

The area also has some of the best music venues in Europe, such as the Gran Teatro del Liceo (the opera) and the Palau de la Música Catalana, a spectacular building. You will also find the Picasso Museum and the city's cathedral.

Las Ramblas borders the Raval, which is currently undergoing a refurbishment process. With a more bohemian atmosphere than other neighborhoods in the Ciutat Vella, El Raval is home to fantastic bars, the MACBA or the Museum of Contemporary Art, as well as a new university campus and other places of interest.

At the lower end of the Gothic Neighbourhood , you'll find the vibrant El Born neighbourhood , packed with narrow, winding streets, independent shops, interesting restaurants, and historic buildings. This neighbourhood borders on one side with the Ciutadella park, which houses the zoo, and on the other, with the old fishermen's neighbourhood of La Barceloneta.
