Barcelona’s Commuter Belt

As increasing numbers of families are choosing to move out of Barcelona thanks to the attractive prices and the larger homes available outside of the city, we take look at some of the most popular commuter belt areas from Sitges to the south to Maresme, 20 minutes north of the city. 

Sitges

Magnificent Sitges gleams like a pearl nestled between unspoiled beaches and the gently rolling Garraf hills. Just a short half hour hop from Barcelona’s Passeo de Gracia on the R2 train or on the C31 motorway, this chic year-round destination offers a wonderful escape from the bustling Catalan capital. Catering to a cosmopolitan crowd, Sitges offers high-end shopping, acclaimed nightlife and 18 kilometres of pristine coastline. Well-heeled bohemian folk mingle with the Barcelona jet set, and a truly international open-minded community, creating a particular brand of laid back glamour unique to this picturesque seaside town. For families, there are a number of reputed international schools within easy distance including The British School, The Olive Tree School, the Lycée Français Bon Soleil and ES International School, which has a strong emphasis on sport and where the former Wimbledon and Olympic tennis champion Andy Murray trained for a short period.

Sant Cugat / Valldoreix

Sant Cugat is a prestigious, quiet neighbourhood located just 5 kilometres outside the centre of Barcelona. It has long been a prime residential area surrounded by nature, popular among working families thanks to it being within easy commuting distance of Barcelona city by road and rail. Nestled within the Collserola and Galliners mountain ranges, Sant Cugat offers vast expanses of protected land to explore on foot or by bike. It is a privileged, clean and green environment, allowing residents to enjoy an excellent quality of life with the bustling metropolis of Barcelona just minutes away.

With a population of approximately 87,000 inhabitants, Sant Cugat offers plenty of local amenities and services without suffering the overcrowding of larger cities. The area boasts everything from leading international schools, golf clubs to theatres and sports centres. All infrastructure and public parks, etc are of a high standard, clean and well maintained, creating a pleasant, safe environment to live in.The town is home to several large business headquarters, including international companies, and boasts a high income per capita.

Valldoreix is a leafy residential area of Sant Cugat with a population of just over 8,000 inhabitants. Valldoreix borders Mirasol to the north and Sant Cugat golf club and town centre to the east. This rural yet well connected area offers all of the advantages of living in a peaceful and safe environment with the option of working in the city. From the neighbourhood  there is easy access to the C-16 and Vallvidrera tunnels for those driving into Barcelona and Valldoreix FGC train station also offers frequent services to Plaça de Catalunya in the very heart of the city.

Maresme Coast

The Maresme region covers a narrow strip of land in the north east of Catalonia, between Barcelona and the Costa Brava. The region has population of around 440,000 inhabitants with 52 kilometres of coastline between Montgat (to the south) and Malgrat de Mar (to the north).

The capital of Maresme is Mataró, with around 125,000 inhabitants and home to the first train line in Peninsular Spain. The Maresme region is known for its unique traditions, fiestas, history and excellent local cuisine and has a distinctive landscape where the mountains and vineyards meet the beaches of the Mediterranean. The area offers the best of both mountain pursuits and water sports. Maresme boasts large sandy beaches interspersed with small coves to form an idyllic landscape with warm, dry summers and mild, bright winters. There are 30 towns and villages, 16 of which are on the coast, most of which have a train station offering quick access (from 45 minutes to 20 minutes) into Barcelona city centre on the suburban RENFE/Rodalies train line between L’Hospitalet de Llobregat and Maçanet-Massanes.

By car you can take either the C-32 or B20 into Barcelona which takes around 40 minutes in rush hour (between 9am and 10am and 7pm and 8pm) or 20 minutes with no traffic.

Tiana

A separate mention for this beautiful traditional village as it is one of the best commuter spots in Barcelona province, being the first village on the Maresme Coast as you drive north from the city, With a population of around 8,000 inhabitants, Tiana has an attractive, historic village centre and forms part of the renowned Alella DO (Denominación de Origen) wine region, the smallest DO in Spain. Just 2 kilometres from the wide sandy beaches of Montgat Nord, Tiana offers quick access to Barcelona along two different motorways. It is also conveniently located close to the Hamelin Laie International School in Montgat, which takes children from 0 to 18 and is one of the few schools in Barcelona offering the IB (International Baccaleurate). While within easy reach of the vibrant hub of the Catalan capital and its airport, Tiana has managed to retain its historical character and charm and offers a good escape for worn-out city workers who appreciate a touch of tranquility at the end of the day.
