Eixample & Gracia
Eixample, which in Catalan means ‘ extension’ is Barcelona’s most centrally located neighbourhood. The area is characterized by its streets designed in a grid pattern, the vision of architect Ildefons Cerdà, who combined the needs for traffic flow with light and ventilation. The needs of the residents were also taken into account so you can find schools, hospitals and markets at almost every few blocks. Art Nouveau and Modernista architecture dominates the area, in particular that of Anton Gaudi whose works La Sagrada Familia, Casa Batló and La Pedrera can all be found here. There are also many new buildings as well as offices, markets, restaurants, hotels, cinemas and international designer stores. It is also the central business district of the city where the Stock Exchange and banks’ main offices are located. The city’s stunning main boulevard Paseo de Gracia divides the district into 'Eixample left' and 'Eixample right' and merges into the district of Gracia.
Gracia, along with neighbouring St Gervasi and Sarria, is one of the small original towns that became incorporated into Barcelona as the city expanded in the 1890s, much to the dismay of its inhabitants. Even today a few locals demand independence for the district. During the reign of Franco, Gracia was the epicentre of revolt against the regime and still retains its political spirit. Like the other older parts of the town, Gracia is crisscrossed by several narrow one-way streets and beautiful old Plazas – perfect for people watching and enjoying long summer evenings. Characterized by a slightly different and bohemian feel, Gracia has a wealth of funky bars, restaurants, galleries, and local markets scattered throughout the barrio and along the main thoroughfare – Gran de Gracia.
Property & house hunting: Eixample is one of Barcelona's most desirable areas to live. Its well laid out, safe streets, stunning architecture and central location attracts buyers of all nationalities and age groups. Gracia apartments tend to be on the smaller side but they often retain original features – including beamed ceilings, little balconies going onto the streets, and beautiful mosaic tiled floors.
Transport: Eixample has excellent transport links and has easy access to Barcelona international airport.
Gracia may appear to be off the beaten track but is only about a 20 minute walk from Plaza Catalunya. Local transport links are good in the centre with buses and metro lines running up Gran de Gracia. However in the heart of Gracia (to the East) public transport links can be few and far between.
Places of interest: Eixample is dominated by Modernista buildings including Sagrada Famila, Casa Batló, La Pedrera, Casa Amatler, Hospital de Santa Creu i de Sant Pau and the Fundació Antoni Tàpies. Parc Guell , one of Gaudi’s most inspirational works is located just north of Gracia.
Shopping: Eixample is Barcelona's main shopping district comprising both high end and high street stores. You can find the likes of Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent and Burberry alongside more affordable stores such as Mango, Zara and Diesel along Paseo de Gracia. Boulevard Rosa and L’Illa on Avenida Diagonal are popular shopping malls. Try Vinçon for innovative, avant-garde homeware and furniture look no further than Mercat de La Concepció for fabulous fresh fruit & veg and fantastic deli stores.
Bars & restaurants: You can sample some of the finest tapas in town at the likes of Cuidad Condal or the Cerveceria Catalana on Rambla Catalunya. The area is also packed with excellent Japanese restaurants including Miu or Ginza. If you are looking for a wider choice of Asian food, go up to Gracia where you can find lots of Indian, Chinese, Lebanese and different ethnic restaurants on Calle Verdi and in Placa del Sol. The Michelin starred El Racó d'en Freixa is also located in Gracia.
